Hey everyone!
Since we've officially launched the new GKM Site, we wanted to make a quick post dedicated to letting you guys know what's changed between the old site and the new site.
First of all, we wanted to reassure everyone of 2 things: 1) no content has been removed; all the content that existed on the old site has either been transferred over, or is still in the process of being transferred. 2) Everything that was available to read / listen to for free on the old site is still available to read / listen to for free on the new site.
We have renamed many of the areas, and restructured other areas to reduce clutter. A lot of this you may have read in the post announcing the soft launch of the site, but others may not have read that far into the post, so we decided to make a dedicated post to what's changed.
Structure
Blog -- Daily WebLogs has been renamed to simply Blog. When you mouse over Blog, you'll notice that we have removed each individual year from being there, as this would not be manageable long term as years continue to be added. However, rest assured the year selection has not been removed from the site entirely; you can find all blog years under the Blog Archive, under the Blog header item. Teaching Series (previously under the Teachings header item) has been renamed to Blog Series, and put under the Blog header item. We renamed it to Blog Series because it includes any generic group of blog posts, which sometimes includes things such a trip reports, or news commentaries that have multiple parts, so while Blog Series still primarily contains Teaching Series blog posts, it was renamed to include all posts that are part of any series.
Studies -- Teachings has been renamed to Studies. You can find the Books under the Studies header item, and while the design of book pages and book chapters has changed quite a bit, every book, tract, and audio is still available to read / listen to for free online! Translated Books have not yet been added to the new site, but will also be found on the Books page once they have been added. There will not be a Translated Books page anymore, instead any book that contains translated versions will be viewable from the Books page. Tracts, Audios, Videos, FFI Newsletters, and Articles can all be found under Studies as well.
Store -- We have implemented a new store software that has been incorporated directly into the site, so it won't look different from the rest of the GKM Website. This means you don't have to go to a different website to purchase a book. You can simply add it to your cart on this website. While the Store page itself will be reworked in the future to allow searching products more efficiently, currently it acts as a central place on GKM to see all purchasable items. You can also now add any item to your cart from that item's page, so for example if you are currently on the page for a particular book, you don't need to access a different page to add that book to your cart. On the far upper right in the header nav is a shopping cart that shows the number of items in your cart. If you click on it, you can open the cart to manage the items that have been added (if any) and checkout.
Events -- News has been renamed to Events. If you click on Events, you can see a Calendar that contains any events that have been added. At this time no events have been transferred from the old site, so the calendar will be empty, but eventually it will hold everything from conferences to watch dates. On that same note, Conference Center has been moved from Teachings to Events, however at this time Conferences still need to be transferred to the new site.
Search -- Search is accessible by clicking the Magnifying Glass (the second icon from the right on desktop, and second icon from the left on mobile). We have implemented a built-in site search on the new site that we will be refining over time. It does not account for typos, and still needs a lot of love, but we wanted to implement it now to give it a test run. If you are unable to find what you were searching for, you can find a link to DuckDuckGo (the current search engine we're using) at the top and bottom of the search results that will automatically insert your search query into the new search and bring you to DuckDuckGo to find results.
There have been minor adjustments to the Header Nav, such as removing unnecessary items to reduce clutter, but the majority of the structure remains the same.
Miscellaneous Instructions
We are still using Print Friendly on our new site to allow for easier and more customizable printing. You can access Print Friendly in the footer of every page in the lower right, there is a green button that says "Print / Email / PDF," under the Share/Print header. This button is also accessible in most sidebars, including blog posts and book chapters. You can also use Print Friendly to save a page as a PDF, or email the page to a friend. You can also share the page using different social media platforms using the buttons at the top of a blog post, or in the footer of the page above the Print button.
The text field in the footer to sign up for the "Mailing List" will sign you up to receive email notifications of new blog posts.
If you can't find something on the new site that you could find on the old, it could be that it was renamed, moved, or hasn't been transferred yet. Please send us a question and we can help you find it if it exists, or let you know it's still in the works.
We have been getting very positive feedback from everyone on the new site, and we couldn't be more happy about that! It has also helped us in identifying areas that have bugs, typos, or just aren't working correctly. With a site this size, any help we can get from the community to help point out things that are broken is a huge help to us. If you spot anything or just want to submit any feedback you have, you can click on the blue button with the double chat bubble floating to the right side of the page toward the top. (This feature has been removed since it was being exploited by bot submissions. If you need to contact us with any problems or feedback, you can do so by heading to our Support Desk)
Blessings,
- GKM Development Team
