View Full Tract ListIn 1933 the government ordered all citizens to exchange their gold for paper currency at the current price of $20.67/oz. It was Executive Order 6102. Once they had all the gold in their possession, they devalued the currency by raising the price of gold to $35/oz. It was legalized theft.
The next year, Executive Order 6814 required most silver holders to surrender their metal to the U.S. Mint within 90 days. This was The Silver Purchase Act of 1934.

Silver was added to the U.S. Critical Minerals List last month. This occurred as part of the 2025 update to the list of minerals deemed critical, published by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Department of the Interior on November 6–7, 2025. This was probably done to prepare for another silver confiscation on the grounds of national security and to save the economy.
The pain to silver owners will be eased somewhat because the price of silver has skyrocketed in the past year. In 1934 the government was required to buy it at the market price. My guess is that it will again compensate citizens at the spot price—which is the price for paper silver, not physical metal or coins.
In 1934 silver coins were exempted, because the government was not allowed (legally) to confiscate money. Silver was constitutional money. So today, silver coins are less likely to be included when the government confiscates silver bullion. But government is lawless, national security trumps all rights, and the constitution is quite meaningless today, so even coins are not fully safe.
