My revelation of the 390-day cycle of intercession was given to me on January 23, 1984. It explained much about my earlier wilderness experience, and it showed the divine purpose for that difficult year.
A few months later, the Net of Prayer called for another prayer campaign which was called Operation Clean Sweep. It was to be fought from July 1-12, 1984. Its purpose could be thought of as a raid against the enemy to reduce its forces that were occupying America after the initial Broken Cross System had invaded in 1981.
Jesus’ army (that was us!) was to sweep west through the country from Chicago to St. Louis, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Tucumcari, Albuquerque, and Las Cruces. From there we were to turn southeast to Corpus Christi, which represented the Body of Christ. The word of the Lord said this about the prayer campaign:
“The purpose of this warfare is to revive the Church, My body. The heavens must be opened above Corpus Christi… If My body does not repent, I shall soon remove the candlestick of My presence from her. Pray for her revival, for this is the key to her survival.”
Essentially, we were praying for “revival” in the Church. Any opposition would come from those who did not want to see the Spirit poured out upon the Church.
We also understood that this prayer battle was about putting an end to abortion and other forms of human sacrifice. So we took note that the day after the end of the battle, July 13, President Reagan announced that the federal government would no longer fund organizations that promoted abortions. Planned Parenthood was as upset in 1984 as they were later under President Trump, who implemented the same policy.
The most important battleground, from my perspective, was over Amarillo, TX on July 9, 1984. On that day, I was typesetting a business form for the company where I worked. When I finished, I walked into the president’s office to get approval for it. However, he was talking to clients on the telephone, so I sat down to wait.
My mind drifted to the ongoing prayer campaign. “How is the campaign going?” I asked the Lord. I was immediately caught up in the spirit and saw a vast horde of demonic forces arrayed against us as we swept through their ranks on white horses. I came into the vision at a point where I was swinging the sword of the Spirit against a group of about thirty ministers who had joined forces with the enemy.
I knew they were ministers because they were wearing inverted collars. Before I could even think about it, I cut down two of them with one swing. I recognized them, and this horrified me. I was jolted out of the vision. The vision must have lasted less than a second, but it was to be fulfilled in the earth over the next two years.
The Nature of Spiritual Warfare
For many (or most) people, spiritual warfare is impersonal. They fight demonic forces eagerly with no hesitation and certainly with no twinge of conscience. This had been my own state of mind as well, until that moment. I then realized that we were also in spiritual warfare against real people. That sobering reality changed everything.
In the years to come, I learned that God’s army was being opposed by real people on earth, some unconsciously and some consciously. It is probably the case that the ministers fighting God were doing so without realizing it. Their souls lacked a connection to their spirit, because they had not yet submitted to the leading of their spirit—which, in turn, should have been saturated by the Holy Spirit. Hence, most of them lived soulishly, thinking their soul was spiritual, and their conscious identity remained bound up in their soul.
Here is where it is vital to know the difference between soul and spirit. A carnally-minded man is one who tries to perfect and improve his soul so that it can be saved. A spiritually-minded man is one who crucifies the old soulish man and transfers his conscious identity to the spirit that has been begotten by our heavenly Father. It is a question of identity. Who are you?? Are you the soul that your earthly father begat, which traces its identity back to Adam, who was made a living soul? Paul calls it the “old man” (KJV) or “old self” (NASB) that has been sentenced to death.
Or are you the new man that has been begotten by God?
I have found that most religious people, including Christians, spend their time and energy trying to save souls, rather than to crucify them. Their understanding of salvation is from the Old Covenant, by which men vow discipline their flesh to be obedient. But God has a different plan, which we know as the New Covenant. His plan is to beget children by the immortal seed of the word. This is clearly stated in 1 Peter 1:23-25,
23 for you have been born again [gennao, “begotten”] not of [Adamic, or fleshly] seed which is perishable [mortal] but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls off, 25 but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word which was preached to you.
Flesh is like grass, because it looks good at first but always fades and dies in the end. Such is the nature of our soul, which we received from Adam. But the immortal seed of the enduring word of God begets an immortal creature within our spirits. This is a child of God in embryo form, which must grow and develop spiritually into full maturity.
In spiritual warfare, I saw many people fighting the army of God. Some of them were Christians by religion, and these did not realize that their Old Covenant salvation opposed God. Most Christians say that they want “revival,” but some are opposed to the way in which the Spirit actually comes. They want the Spirit to be orderly and calm. But the Holy Spirit has a tendency to cause mayhem, because that can be the effect of sincere repentance. Hence, by putting conditions on the Holy Spirit, they oppose the revival without realizing it.
In addition to Christians, I came to see that the demonic forces we were fighting were sent into battle by more sinister people on the earth—witches, warlocks, Satanists, Luciferians, etc. Their secret ceremonies involved committing sins and performing blood sacrifices that were designed to empower themselves by creating evil spirits. The greater the sin, the more powerful the evil spirit. Human sacrifice is a great sin. Sacrificing an innocent virgin is greater. Sacrificing a baby is the ultimate sin, which creates the most powerful evil spirits.
When we engaged in spiritual warfare in the heavens, our own spirits did the work. Those who could discern spiritually were able to see what was happening and to engage in battle on a more conscious level. Witches and Satanists train for this, but there is very little training available for Christians. Nonetheless, when believers do learn the art of spiritual warfare, they can be very effective, and as long as they do not violate one of the laws of war, they cannot lose.
If God had not delivered me from my own church in late 1981, I would have remained bound by flesh, having little spiritual understanding or revelation. But thanks be to God, He called the Net of Prayer into warfare to “free God’s chosen elect from the Broken Cross system.” I was freed, not by my own will, but by the will of God, who had mercy on me and called me out of darkness into His light.
Results of the Warfare
When I saw the two ministers cut down by the sword of the Spirit on July 9, 1984, the revelation was too much for me to handle. So I was jolted back to my earthly, soulish consciousness, where I began to process what I had seen briefly.
The strange thing was that whereas I knew that both of these ministers were well known to me, I could only remember one of them. It was the pastor in Phoenix. When I wrote The Wars of the Lord, I wrote only about the forgotten pastor. But the time has come to tell the rest of the story, not every detail, of course, but enough to teach the principles of spiritual warfare.
The half-second vision that I saw that day left me with the knowing that this pastor would die within a year unless, of course, he repented. Seven months later, February 5, 1985, Chuck received the revelation to “Count 15 days from today to the start.” It had to do with “the start” of another trip that he was to make, following the route that the army of God had taken in Operation Clean Sweep. He was to bring into the earth that which had been accomplished in the heavens.
I no longer have the written reports to know more about that word (as understood at the time), but my records show that the Phoenix pastor had an operation for a tumor on February 20, 1985. They told him that the tumor was cancerous and that it was inoperable. I heard about it a few days later, and on February 25, I was struck by an overwhelming feeling of sadness for him. It was the day that I fully broke free of all bitterness from the past.
From that moment on, I was genuinely concerned about his health and began to search for a way that his life might be spared. My immediate prayer was that God would send me to Phoenix to speak with him again and hope that God would work a miracle of reconciliation. But God would not allow me to go.
I struggled with this over the next few months, having a growing sense of dread, but feeling helpless to do anything. The pastor was in God’s hands and His purposes would be fulfilled.
